Brat Von D
Nickname: Brat
What’s the origin of your name? I’ve got the tats like Kat Von D, but with a little bit more of a pain in the butt attitude.
Number: 10-24
What does your number mean? It’s police “ten code” for assault and/or offering emergency backup.
Team: B Team
What position do you play? Blocker
How long have you been skating? Basically? Since March of ’11. I did a little session skating at a pre-pre-teen but that’s about it.
When did you join derby? March 2011
How did you get involved in derby? The lovely Ms. Twilight actually. We worked for the same company and she mentioned it a few times but with my work schedule, it was never an option. When I got a new job, first thing I did was get with her and find out when fresh meat was. My last day at that job was Friday, I started fresh meat on Sunday and my new job on Monday.
Signature move: Not entirely sure I’ve developed one yet, but I hear my booty is a force to be reckoned with at times.
What role do you play behind the scenes? Sponsorship & Recruitment committees.
Pre-bout ritual: Light lunch.. i.e. chicken noodle soup, a few slices of sharp cheddar cheese, Greek yogurt and water. Lots of water.. A banana or two as well.
Motivational quote: Simple and to the point, “Let’s play some roller derby!” from 99 herself.
Derby heroes: I’ve always enjoyed watching JoAnn of Arc skate, and I love me some heavy hitters: 99, Rusty, Bomba & Wop.
What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? The ability to just shut up and skate.
What do you do outside of derby? I work as an admin for a private research company in the incarcerations department.. aaaand I’m a mommy to a pain-in-the-butt gorgeous little girl.
Favorite derby moment so far? Ooh.. first bout.. Nothing beats that!
Favorite derby teams? I’m going to say OCRG simply bc I have a friend who got into derby bc of me and she skates for them.
If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be? Backblocking. I get it, really.. I do, but I don’t have to like it.
What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Again: Shut up and skate. No whining, no excuses, just make it happen. It’s worth it in the end, but you have to work at it; it is a full contact sport after all.
Derby awards? MVP @ Bite Night ’11 (my first bout, woot!)
Where are you from? Orange County, California
How long have you lived here? 5 years
What keeps you here? My daughter & her very derby supportive dad!
Animals? Do dust bunnies count?
Family? My dad back home in SoCal is my number one fan and has always been there to support me, motivate me.. and most importantly: fund me! He’s the awesome kind of dad that buys tickets to bouts he’ll never be at simply to help the league! Love him more than words will ever express!

Yo Child of Mine: And you thought my gene pool was a bad thing. Skinny is for magazines! Size counts! Remember when you land a good hit and feel the pain, just realize the other person is feeling it more than you.
Keep the wheels rollin’

Went to my first roller derby bout last night, and fell in love with the sport. You ladies are really talented. Can’t wait for the next home bout. Have to say by far you are my favorite roller girl. Hope that doesn’t sound to stalkerish. As a 33 yr old guy finally found a sport i like other than football.
