Jett #G6: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for February 2012
NWA Roller Derby would like to recognize February’s skater of the month, Jett!
Its a bird, no its a plane no it’s JETT!!!…. To say this skater is fast may be a understatement.
Before Jett turned 18 you would hear many derby girls asking how much longer we had to wait until Jett could join derby. Only 3 days after her birthday she was an official member of NWARD and has been moving up every since, becoming one of our top skaters.
Jett has only been playing derby for a short time but her background in speed skating and personal fitness has made her a asset to our league’s growth and physical development. We all see great things in this young ladie’s derby future.
Skater Tid-Bits:
- What does your number mean? It’s a song lyric: “I’m so fly like a G6”
- What role do you play behind the scenes? I am on the coaching committee.
- Motivational quote: “Believe in yourself and all that you are, know that there is something inside of you that is greater than any obstacle.”
- What do you do outside of derby? I’m a finance major at the U of A, and I work at Starlight Skatium

Thank You!
As many of you know, the amazing and dashing ladies and gents of Northwest Arkansas Roller Derby held a fundraising event to help fund their All-Star team’s upcoming tournament event, Governor’s Cup, hosted by Assassination City in Dallas, TX on January 27th.
A large crowd attended this event which consisted of the roller girls and various members of the league as well as friends, family, sponsors, and fans. At this fundraising event, much thanks to YOU great fans, NWARD was able to raise $500 to fund their travels next weekend!
We couldn’t have done this without all of you. We hope that you had a great time skating with us and will be able to come again soon.
You can also help the league by purchasing a season pass or ticket to our upcoming bout on January 22nd on our website.
Thanks to a generous donation and the purchase of a few dates with roller girls from our fantastic sponsors at Macadoodles, there is no doubt that we will make it to Dallas and back all in one piece.
We love our sponsors!
Scarlet Knuckles
Nickname: Scarlet, and I’ve heard that I have also been called Spider Monkey which has to do with my having long-ish legs.
What’s the origin of your name?
I have always liked the name Scarlet, and I used to live near Charleston, SC between the ages of 10-18. So, I guess Scarlet pays homage to Scarlet O’Hara. And, Knuckles comes from a ‘tough guy’ comment my husband made one night…in jest, he swung his fists around as if to box the air saying, “I’ve got five for a dollar – I got plenty and I got ‘em cheap”. This gave me the idea to be Scarlet Knuckles – 5/$1.
Number: 72 (formerly 5/$1)
What does your number mean? The WFTDA changed a rule concerning jersey numbers not too long after I started playing, so I had to change my number. I changed it to 72, which is my birth year.
Team: NWARD B-Tea
What position do you play? Blocker and Jammer
How long have you been skating? I casually skated as a kid, but when I decided to attend my first ever derby practice, I had not been on roller skates since I was 10-12-ish.
When did you join derby? September 2008
How did you get involved in derby? I approached the NWARD booth at Springfest in 2008 and a girl stepped up and said, “Hey, I recognize you from pre-school”. Our boys had been going to the same school and we had passed each other coming and going all year long. She gave me a season schedule and suggested I attend the bout they were having that same night, so I did. I had no idea what was going on in the game, but it still looked like SO much fun that I KNEW I had to do it! Oh, and that girl was the beautiful, Ms. Apache Rose Peacock.
Signature move: Not really a signature move, but I’ve been told I’m slippery. Oh, and my hip bones have a reputation for being unusually ‘sharp’ and leaving marks.
What role do you play behind the scenes? I just like helping out whenever I can! I like setting up the track before bouts. I like to NSO bouts when I’m not playing in them. I’ve worked on our Sponsorship committee for a few years, and I like participating in our fundraising events. And, I’ve even made a set of emergency helmet panties the night before The Arkansas Killbillies had to leave for a tournament in Georgia.
Pre-bout ritual: Stretch, eat right, drink lots of water
What do you do outside of derby? I am a mother of two – a ten year old girl and a seven year old boy. Besides raising them, I am also a hair stylist.
What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? The second you feel like you are going to fall, get lower. Lowering your center of gravity will likely keep you from falling.

What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Don’t be afraid. Derby is not the kind of sport you will get better at by being afraid of the other players. Also, work at every practice as if it could be your last; if you give anything less than everything, it very well may be your last practice.

Number: 30

What position do you play? The Pivot position has a very special place in my heart, but I can play any blocker position.
How long have you been skating? I started skating June of 2010
When did you join derby? October 2010
How did you get involved in derby? I have wanted to join the derby movement since the moment it started resurfacing in Texas, but I didn’t get enough confidence to play until I saw the Killbillies play that I knew that I had to join this amazing sport.

What role do you play behind the scenes? PR Committee
Pre-bout ritual: Sleep in, check all my gear, pick-out a super cute outfit, and then I spend a ridiculous amount of time on my hair, which is ridiculous, because I’m just going to put a helmet on and mess it all up!

If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be? There are a lot of them that I have a hard time not doing during a bout, but I would say most of them are needed for the game to be played fair and safe.
What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Don’t give up!!! It takes a long time to learn the sport so hang in there and give it 100%.
Derby awards? MVP of the 2011 (Home teams) Championship game
Where are you from? Modesto, California. My family moved to Arkansas when I was 11.
How long have you lived here? 17 years (except for the 3rd year when I attended The Art Institute of Dallas in Dallas, TX)

Doom Buggy
Nickname: Bug, Doom, Ricky, whatever
Origin of name: I’m an entomologist, so I was trying to find a name with “bug” in it, but also one that wasn’t too obscure.
Number: No number yet. Refs have unique numbers, so I’m trying to find one that is available and has some meaning
Team: Team Zeeb!
Position: Inside Pack Ref and Outside Pack Ref
How long have you been skating: Skated as a kid at Super Skate near Dallas. When I started fresh meat, I had not been on skates in over 25 years!!…was not like riding a bike… My tailbone hurt A LOT!
When did I join derby: April 2011

Derby Heroes: Amazed and awestruck by all of them! Derby folks are good people.
What makes me have instant respect for another skater: If they are helpful and don’t get offended/annoyed by what may seem like a simple or naive question. We all have to start somewhere.
What do I do outside of derby: I work for the Entomology Department at the University of Arkansas. Too many hobbies to list; love learning any new skill.
Favorite derby moments so far: Reffing my first bout. It was a league fun bout and it was amazing! Finally deciding on a derby name and hearing it announced that first time. It just sounded right.
Favorite derby teams: No favoritism here
If I could remove one penalty: I don’t have enough experience yet to make a suggestion. Jammer line starts stink, not just for the audience, but it makes it difficult to see what’s going on. Would I change it? Meh, I’ll leave that to someone else for now.
What advice would I give to new players: Stick with it. Go to as many open skate and speed skate sessions as possible. Ask several people about their technique for a certain skill. Everyone has their own way of doing something, and one way may really work better for you.
