99 Problems: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for April 2012

99 Problems  began with NWARD in May of 2010 and played as a Backwoods Bettie during the 2010 season. As an asset to the Hardwood Hustlas home team and NWA’s All Star travel team in 2011, she continues to be a force for reckoning in the All Star’s 2012 season. In the past, she has been the head of Recruitment, and currently serves on the Sponsorship and Ref Committees.

Off the track, 99 is a busy mom of 4 young children, 10 year old Queen Drama PreTeen, 4 year old Rhinestone Potty Mouth, and 3 year old twins, Captain Midnight Refrigerator Raider, and Princess Glued To Mom’s Leg.  She credits her husband, 99′s Problem, and her Derby Wife, Rusty Guillotine, for being her biggest supporters in life and in derby.

During the day, 99 is a nurse at Elizabeth Richardson Center, an early intervention and early education program for children from the age of 6 weeks to 5 years old who have developmental delays and developmental disabilities. These children and their families have shown 99 how to overcome real life obstacles and how to do so with some humor, some grace and a grin.

Busy family, full time career, community involvement, AND derby life.  Through all of the hats and helmets this multi-tasker wears, she keeps a positive and encouraging attitude with her teammates and continues to work hard, making 3 practices and many sacrifices (including a nap or a trip to the bathroom alone) every week to improve on her own skills as a skater. This is why 99 Problem$ is NWARD’s Skater of the Month!!

Skater Tidbits:

  • What’s the origin of your name? It’s the title of a song by Jay-Z. There’s a nice little play on words involved because of the fact that derby is primarily played by women
  • Signature move: Rusty Guillotine and I have this SWEET sandwich crush move. Usually it’s an accident that we both moved in on the same girl at the same time, but you really don’t wanna get caught in the middle of it.
  • Favorite derby teams? KCRW, Magic City, Green Country and No Coast.
  • Animals? Adopted American Boxer- 10 year old ‘Nutter Butter’, a Jack Russell Terrier that my kids named Bentley Xavier. He was a 4th of July baby.

71 Showdown

The ladies from Kansas City are going to shoot straight down Highway 71 and pay the NWA All-Stars a visit. Come watch what is destined to be a street rumbling bout between these two teams. Sisters versus sisters, who will claim the rights to our beautiful scenic highway?

Coach Mancakes: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for March 2012

NWARD is proud to announce our Skater of the Month March 2012 is none other than Grant ‘Mancakes’ Epperson!

This is Mancake’s second year coaching at NWARD, he originally became involved with the league when he joined the Southern Scallywags, Northwest Arkansas’ Men’s Roller Derby team. Mancakes later joined the Magic City Misfits of Jacksonville Florida in 2009, and this team is currently ranked 3rd in the Nation of Men’s Roller Derby.

To add to his extensive background with roller derby, Mancakes is also a sponsored Skater/Front Runner for Atom Wheels. His life prior to derby was built on the strong foundation of speed skating, and because he’s been on wheels since he was 10 years old, it’s no surprise that he is a two time national champion in competitive quad speed skating.

“Coach Cakes pushes you to do things you never thought you could physically do. When I doubt myself, whether its finishing an endurance drill or learning a new skill, he does not doubt me… He won’t let us give up on ourselves, so when we DO finish that those crazy endurance drills, and when we DO learn a new skill, you can tell by the grin on his face, that he feels that success too. Then he yells, ‘I KNEW you could do it!!’”99 Problems.

So, where do you find Mancakes when he’s not on skates? Between working at Starlight Skatium and coaching NWA Roller Derby, Mancakes  enjoys competing with the Magic City Misfits alongside his Partner-in-Crime Megasoreass, shuffle skating between jams while reffing bouts, and traveling the U.S. just to watch derby, so you’ll lucky to spot him without those wheels. (Atom Wheels, to be exact.)

That’s just the way it goes for a guy whose vocabulary consists mainly of the words “Teamwork!”, “Squat!”, and the phrase, “Whats the biggest part about Roller Derby?”, and finally, Cakes words to live by…
“Roller Derby is not a sport, it’s a lifestyle.”

Jett #G6: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for February 2012

NWA Roller Derby would like to recognize February’s skater of the month, Jett!

Its a bird, no its a plane no it’s JETT!!!…. To say this skater is fast may be a understatement.
Before Jett turned 18 you would hear many derby girls asking how much longer we had to wait until Jett could join derby. Only 3 days after her birthday she was an official member of NWARD and has been moving up every since, becoming one of our top skaters.

Jett has only been playing derby for a short time but her background in speed skating and personal fitness has made her a asset to our league’s growth and physical development. We all see great things in this young ladie’s derby future.

Skater Tid-Bits:

  • What does your number mean? It’s a song lyric: “I’m so fly like a G6”
  • What role do you play behind the scenes? I am on the coaching committee.
  • Motivational quote: “Believe in yourself and all that you are, know that there is something inside of you that is greater than any obstacle.”
  • What do you do outside of derby? I’m a finance major at the U of A, and I work at Starlight Skatium

Read more about Jett here on her Skater Profile Page

Thank You!

As many of you know, the amazing and dashing ladies and gents of Northwest Arkansas Roller Derby held a fundraising event to help fund their All-Star team’s upcoming tournament event, Governor’s Cup, hosted by Assassination City in Dallas, TX on January 27th.

A large crowd attended this event which consisted of the roller girls and various members of the league as well as friends, family, sponsors, and fans. At this fundraising event, much thanks to YOU great fans, NWARD was able to raise $500 to fund their travels next weekend!

We couldn’t have done this without all of you. We hope that you had a great time skating with us and will be able to come again soon.

You can also help the league by purchasing a season pass or ticket to our upcoming bout on January 22nd on our website.

Thanks to a generous donation and the purchase of a few dates with roller girls from our fantastic sponsors at Macadoodles, there is no doubt that we will make it to Dallas and back all in one piece.

We love our sponsors!

Scarlet Knuckles

Name: Scarlet Knuckles

Nickname: Scarlet, and I’ve heard that I have also been called Spider Monkey which has to do with my having long-ish legs.

What’s the origin of your name?
I have always liked the name Scarlet, and I used to live near Charleston, SC between the ages of 10-18. So, I guess Scarlet pays homage to Scarlet O’Hara. And, Knuckles comes from a ‘tough guy’ comment my husband made one night…in jest, he swung his fists around as if to box the air saying, “I’ve got five for a dollar – I got plenty and I got ‘em cheap”.  This gave me the idea to be Scarlet Knuckles – 5/$1.

Number: 72 (formerly 5/$1)

What does your number mean? The WFTDA changed a rule concerning jersey numbers not too long after I started playing, so I had to change my number. I changed it to 72, which is my birth year.

Team: NWARD B-Tea

What position do you play? Blocker and Jammer

How long have you been skating? I casually skated as a kid, but when I decided to attend my first ever derby practice, I had not been on roller skates since I was 10-12-ish.

When did you join derby? September 2008

How did you get involved in derby? I approached the NWARD booth at Springfest in 2008 and a girl stepped up and said, “Hey, I recognize you from pre-school”.  Our boys had been going to the same school and we had passed each other coming and going all year long. She gave me a season schedule and suggested I attend the bout they were having that same night, so I did.  I had no idea what was going on in the game, but it still looked like SO much fun that I KNEW I had to do it! Oh, and that girl was the beautiful, Ms. Apache Rose Peacock.

Signature move: Not really a signature move, but I’ve been told I’m slippery.  Oh, and my hip bones have a reputation for being unusually ‘sharp’ and leaving marks.

What role do you play behind the scenes? I just like helping out whenever I can! I like setting up the track before bouts. I like to NSO bouts when I’m not playing in them. I’ve worked on our Sponsorship committee for a few years, and I like participating in our fundraising events. And, I’ve even made a set of emergency helmet panties the night before The Arkansas Killbillies had to leave for a tournament in Georgia.

Pre-bout ritual: Stretch, eat right, drink lots of water

What do you do outside of derby?  I am a mother of two – a ten year old girl and a seven year old boy. Besides raising them, I am also a hair stylist.

What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players?  The second you feel like you are going to fall, get lower. Lowering your center of gravity will likely keep you from falling.

Derby awards? Skater of the Month – February 2010, 3 MVP awards

Where are you from? I was born in Little Rock, AR, but I moved to Fayetteville from Los Angeles in 2005 after living there since 1996.

How long have you lived here? Almost 7 years

What keeps you here? Fayetteville is awesome!

Animals?Piper – a Welsh Corgi, A White’s Tree Frog with no name, Skittles and Midnight – Jaxon and Sophia’s Beta Fish
