Nickname: Lex or Lexy
What’s the origin of your name? After months and months of deliberation on what would be the best derby name, I finally came back to one that both my derby wife, Cosmic, and my girlfriend had suggested from the get-go. And it’s a play off my real name, so why not?
What does your number mean? It’s the answer. The big one. The answer to life, the universe and everything. (And for anyone who isn’t a super nerd, it’s from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.)
Team: I was on the Pistol Whips in my first season, and now I’m really proud to skate with the ladies of NWARD B-Team.
What position do you play? Blocker. Usually inside or back.
How long have you been skating? Since January 2010, I think.
When did you join derby? I joined league on 10-10-10
How did you get involved in derby? Buzz Bomb talked me into going to practice one day. I didn’t think it would really be something that I enjoyed, but that feeling of being able to fall over and over again and just get up and shake it off was really amazing. And after I found a fresh meat partner (Cosmic) I knew I was in for good.
What role do you play behind the scenes? I’m involved in events committee and recruiting new skaters. I also coach Jr. Derby.
Pre-bout ritual: Relax, drink a lot of water and stretch.
Motivational quote: Never stop moving.
Derby heroes: Dilliverance (who first taught me how to skate and always encouraged me), my derby wife Cosmic, JoAnn, Jett, and all of the talented skaters I know. Also, all of my Jr. Derby kids who work so hard each practice.
What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? Anyone who works hard and tries to stay positive has my respect.
What do you do outside of derby? I draw and paint, mostly. Sometimes I adventure outside.
Favorite derby moment so far? My first bout, I think. Or my first mash-up bout in Fort Smith.
Favorite derby teams? I really like CoMo. And I enjoyed skating against the ladies in CARD.
If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be? I’m not sure. I don’t really mind any of the penalties, to be honest. Backblocking is kind of frustrating sometimes, but I can see why that penalty is there.
What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Run. A lot. And then don’t stop. Skating all the time is great, but it really helps your stamina to have that time doing cardio activities off skates. Aside from that, practice, practice, practice (and not just at practice. At home, too.).
Where are you from? North Little Rock, mostly.
How long have you lived here? Since 2008.
What keeps you here? My girlfriend is going to school here and I have a strong network of friends. My dad and his family also moved to the area recently.
Animals? I have two cats that I’ve been told vaguely resemble pandas.
Family? Just my dad, step-mom and one sister in the area, but I also have three other sisters, two brothers, and another set of parents all scattered about (mostly in Arkansas). Not to mention my girlfriend, all of my friends in the area, and my amazing derby wife, Cosmic Grrl.
