Twilight Zone

Name: Twilight Zone

Nickname: Twilight

What’s the origin of your name? I worked for 40/29 news at the time I tried out for derby and they all voted that it was the most popular name out of all that I had picked. Also my “real” name is Twyla and kinda sounds like twilight so when I was little I got made fun of and called that. Wish I realized then just how cool the name was!

Number: 20

What does your number mean? There are a few reasons why I’m number 20:
It’s my husbands favorite number, we met when I was 20, both our moms are 20yrs older than us (20 is just weird for us I guess), and when I started skating, my favorite race car driver Tony Stewart was number 20.

Teams: Capt of Backwoods Betties, Arkansas Killbillies, Co-Capt of Hardwood Hustlas, and Capt of NWA B-Team

What positions do you play? Pivot and Blocker

How long have you been skating? I skated a little when I was younger but until I joined derby, I hadn’t been on skates since I was 11! And that was only for a b-day party! Before that I was probably around 9. But man derby has taught me so much!

When did you join derby? I passed my (what was then called MST’s) in ’07. I was so excited I jumped up on a bench and fell on the floor on my knee! I had the worst rug burn for 2wks but it was so worth it to finally be a derby girl! And been loving it every since!

How did you get involved in derby? I saw a flier for a bout and my mom had always told me awesome stories about a friend she had that played for the Thunderbirds way back when, and I just had to check it out. At halftime I talked to Danger Darling at the merch table about how to get involved, she told me how great it was and told me I had 2 check practice out and I did the next week!

Signature move: Sneak attack

What role do you play behind the scenes? I’m a part of the events and reffing committees

Pre-bout ritual: Make sure I have thick socks on, my contacts in and ready to go!!

Motivational quote: Make the best out of each day, only you can ruin it! (some people just kinda help you a little!

Derby heroes: Saba Taj (for being the most helpful and motivational skater I’ve ever known), JoAnn because I’ve watched her grow in derby since day 1 and she has learned and taught so much, and because shes just awesome! And Kelly Young (do I really need to say why)?!

What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? Someone who has a great attitude after the game, or who can apologize for their blatant penalties or hostility during the game. Also one who gives respect, gets respect.

What do you do outside of derby? I am a photographer, wife, aunt, & sister. I love to take portraits and spend as much time as I can with my family.

Favorite derby moment so far? I would have to say my first home game in Springdale, lots of friends and half my family was there, we won and my mom was so proud! She said she always thought I should do something like that.

Favorite derby teams? My team is #1 of course! Then I would have to say either OKC cause they’re crazy fun! Or COMO cause they are too!

If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be? You know I’ve always thought there would be a bunch I’d take away, but when I stop and think about them all, I can’t think of one.

What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Just have fun! When it stops being fun, then its time to get out.

Derby awards? MVP of Backwoods Betties Regional Tournament ’10
