Venus De Monic: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for June 2012

Name: Venus de Monic

Nickname: Venus, or on occasion The Demon

What’s the origin of your name? I love art. Joe was taking art history class at the time and we formed the name based off of Venus de Milo.

Number: 1820

What does your number mean? It is the year that Venus de Milo was discovered. She was pulled out of the rubble and put back together (except for the arms obviously); her origins remain a mystery but she is still priceless.

Team: All Stars, B-team, Gatlin Girls

What position do you play? Jammer with a little blocking thrown in here and there

How long have you been skating? I have skated recreationally on and off since I was a little tot.

When did you join derby? I started Fresh meat Sept 2010 and joined the league Dec 2010.

How did you get involved in derby? I watched the show Rollergirls when it aired and fell in love with it. One day I noticed the Starlight sign advertising an upcoming bout; I didn’t know there was a league here until then. Joe later sent me the link to the NWARD website, and I just showed up one Sunday and never looked back.

Signature move: Getting right back up after getting knocked on my keister

What role do you play behind the scenes? I help out with fresh meat practices and any of the fundraisers I can

Pre-bout ritual: No junk food the day before or the day of (its hard for me), no work outs the day before, nice long soak in the tub, quiet meditation with some yoga

Motivational quote: “If its worth doing, its worth doing right.” -My grandpa

Derby heroes: Lulu Demon – I met her at Rollercon and she taught some fun jammer classes. She has an amazing spirit, energy, and attitude for jamming, JoAnn- her attitude is as fantastic as her skating, Mega

What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? Seeing someone give 100%. Someone with great attitude towards their team, league, and the sport; a team player.

What do you do outside of derby? I work full time as a Physician Assistant with the GI group at Mercy. I love crafting, especially knitting and scrapbooking. I’m a big music and movie fan.

Favorite derby moment so far? watching JoAnn cream the blocker that blind sided me during my first All Star bout

Favorite derby teams? Actually none in particular, I just love to watch bouts and let out a woot for spectacular plays and moves of anybody, no matter who they are or what team they are on

If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be? I’m down with getting rid of minors

What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Skate. Know becoming great does not happen over night. Treat everyone with respect, including yourself.

Derby awards? I’m working on it. But I give myself an unofficial Awesome award. You know. For being awesome.

Where are you from? I was born in Tacoma, WA and lived in South Carolina, Indiana, Morrilton, and Searcy.

How long have you lived here? 4 years

What keeps you here? After I finished my undergrad and grad, I was struggling looking for a job. A friend of mine from school called from Springdale and said there was an opening there. I packed my few belongings in my car and drove up here. Joe transferred to U of A, and we got married soon after. We fell in love with the area and decided to put down roots here.

Animals? Any one that has been around me long enough know I consider them more to be my babies: my pug Liam and my black cat Amadeus

Family? My husband Joe (still working on his derb widow name). I have one older brother Seth who lives in Memphis. My parents currently live in Mississippi.
