I was going to school in Joplin, MO and saw a flyer. I went to a practice with MOKAN and been addicted to the sport ever since. Then transfered to NWARD Feb 2009. Signature move: I like to block while skating backwards What roll do you play behind the scenes? Name: Justice K Nickname: Justice What’s the origin of your name? I’m a law student by day. Number: 009 What does your number mean? It’s sort of a 007 thing but ‘9’ has always been my lucky. Team: NWA All Stars, NWA Natural Disasters What position do you play? Blocker How long have you been skating? Off and on for 8 years When did you join derby? Originally, in 2006. I came on to NWA in 2011. How did you get involved in derby? When I lived in MO, there was a rink right down from where I worked, so I started going to some of their first practices as the Springfield Rollergirls. Later, I moved out of the country, but I always knew when I came back stateside that it would have to be in a place where there’s derby. Enter NWA! Signature move: Maybe less of a move, but I love playing in the back of the pack and being the first line of defense. What roll do you play behind the scenes? I’m head of the Grievance Committee. Pre bout ritual: Double and triple-check all my equipment, stretch, and hydrate. Mean-mug the other team a bit. Motivational quote: Embrace failure. Do it with wit, grace, and style. A mediocre failure is just as boring as a mediocre success. Derby heroes: Beyonslay, Bonnie D.Stroir, my teammates What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? Getting up quickly after falling or being knocked down. What do you do outside of derby? Read, write, listen, study, repeat. Favorite derby moment so far? There are so many to choose from. I have a feeling that playing my first bout as an NWA All Star will top the others. Also, all the love and support from derby fans the world over when our gear was stolen last summer! Favorite derby teams? NWA, SRG, KCRW If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be? By and large, I don’t think there are any extraneous penalties. For purely selfish reasons, I would get rid of direction of gameplay so I wouldn’t ever get called on it again. What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Buy good-quality pads. July 2007 How did you get involved in derby? I saw a recruitment flyer in the sporting goods store I used to work in and decided to check it out. I’ve been hooked ever since. Name: Venus de Monic Nickname: Venus, or on occasion The Demon What’s the origin of your name? I love art. Joe was taking art history class at the time and we formed the name based off of Venus de Milo. Number: 1820 What does your number mean? It is the year that Venus de Milo was discovered. She was pulled out of the rubble and put back together (except for the arms obviously); her origins remain a mystery but she is still priceless. Team: All Stars, B-team, Gatlin Girls What position do you play? Jammer with a little blocking thrown in here and there How long have you been skating? I have skated recreationally on and off since I was a little tot. When did you join derby? I started Fresh meat Sept 2010 and joined the league Dec 2010. How did you get involved in derby? I watched the show Rollergirls when it aired and fell in love with it. One day I noticed the Starlight sign advertising an upcoming bout; I didn’t know there was a league here until then. Joe later sent me the link to the NWARD website, and I just showed up one Sunday and never looked back. Signature move: Getting right back up after getting knocked on my keister What role do you play behind the scenes? I help out with fresh meat practices and any of the fundraisers I can Pre-bout ritual: No junk food the day before or the day of (its hard for me), no work outs the day before, nice long soak in the tub, quiet meditation with some yoga Motivational quote: “If its worth doing, its worth doing right.” -My grandpa Derby heroes: Lulu Demon – I met her at Rollercon and she taught some fun jammer classes. Number: 5 What does your number mean? 5 is my favorite number, it has many lovely qualities and properties. Team: All Stars What position do you play? Any, but I am always a little hesitant to jam. How long have you been skating? I loved skating as a little girl but took a long break from it until June 2010. When did you join derby? About one year ago. How did you get involved with derby? I watched “Whip It” one night with my college roommate and it was love at first hit. Signature move? None. Pre-bout ritual? Crank up any song with a driving beat while I drive there then get pumped with my teammates in the locker room.
