Jaims Needham

Name: Jaims Needham Nickname: Jaims Maims What’s the origin of your name? my mom actually came up with “Jaims Maims”, she first liked “Jaimer the Maimer” more. When I first started derby I skated by Jaims Maims, but since have started to go by my real name. Number: 47 What does your number mean? Its actually very significant thing with my long time best friend and I, but if I told you, I’d have to kill you =) Team: All Stars What position do you play? Blocker How long have you been skating? Never skated until roller derby =) When did you join derby? End of 2009 How did you get involved in derby? Just thought it sounded awesome!  Competitive sport was all i knew growing up,  Once you’re an adult there used to be nothing there for women really.  I was derby as a chance to be me again and be the athlete I loved being as a kid, and i love every minute of it! Signature move: Magic boobs LOL What roll do you play behind the scenes? I’m a new transfer to this league and don’t play a behind the scenes roll at the moment Per bout ritual: I don’t think i have much of one.  I always drink my Body By Vi Nutrition Shake and Nuero/Pro drink and just focus of doing my best.  I also get a little jumpy and excited sometimes =) Derby heroes: OMG, I’m the biggest fan of Tracy “disco” Akers! What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? Hard work and determination. Someone who never gives up and is a good person off the track as well. What do you do outside of derby?  I’m a hair and makeup artist and own my own Studio with stylists, aestheticians and photographer.  Other than work, I love cooking, hitting the gym, singing, dancing, organizing things, but above above all, i love spending time with those i care for the most, laughs and fun times over a glass (or five) of wine! Favorite derby moment so far?  Probably when after a bout a jammer from other team came up to me and said “You’re SOO deceiving! You’re so tiny but you hit SO Hard!” Favorite derby teams? Denver Mile High Club & Texas If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be? NONE! I think they are all there for a reason, and I don’t generally spend much time in the box and love getting penalties on opposing skaters such as track cutting!  One of the most rewarding feelings ever is soul crushing a jammer! What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Don’t let ANYthing convince you that you can’t do it!  I am walking proof that you can make it.  I went through shattering my leg and dealing with other health problems when doctors told me I should be barely...

Alex The Great: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for April 2013

Our Skater of the Month for April is Alex the Great! Alex is a newcomer to our league, joining the Natural Disasters team just this past December. But don’t let her rookie status or sweet smile fool you – this girl is a dynamo, both on and off the track! Whether delivering a swift booty block to a passing opponent or practicing her own quick feet on the jammer line, Alex hasn’t slowed down since she first strapped on her skates in fresh meat last June. And how has she accomplished so much in such a short time? According to Alex, “I’m very stubborn so I don’t give up easily. I always try my hardest and push myself to do my best.” When asked what first attracted her to derby and what has kept her here, Alex had this to say: “I guess that I’ve been impressed by Roller Derby since it made it’s reappearance. I like to think of myself as a strong person and, suddenly, here was a sport full of strong people that really welcomes you not matter what your background. It isn’t an easy sport, but you don’t need a solid history of skating to participate. The whole team wants to succeed and wants you to succeed along with it. It’s a great community.” From the whole NWARD community, a warm welcome and congratulations to our April Skater of the Month, Alex the...

The Krägermeister: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for March 2013

Our skater of the month for February is the multi-talented Craig Graves! From refereeing and bout production to social media and promotion, Craig wears a lot of hats here at NWA Roller Derby. A lifelong skater, Craig credits his abilities to trying all kinds of tricks, even pulling 360’s over the limbo stick as a kid. Off the track, he’s a quiet laid-back kind of guy, but when he’s part of the referee lineup (where he’s known as The Kraigermeister), skaters know they’d better stick to the rules or suffer the consequences! Plus he’s been known to spend hours discussing the finer points of roller derby regulations with his fellow refs, so every time you talk to him you’re sure to learn something new. As far as signature moves, he says that as a ref he’s not generally allowed to do “anything cool” out on the track, but in his words: “If you think of something, let me know. I like a challenge.” When asked about the part he plays in the league, Craig says “I would like to think that I’m the guy who helps pull everyone one together to be more of a derby family than a bunch of ladies trying to hit each other. It takes at least 50 dedicated volunteers, working together to pull off a successful roller derby bout. So my favorite part is when the bout is over, everyone has shaken hands, the crowd has been entertained, the awards have been given and I get to go have a seat and have an ice cold beverage with the gang.” Congratulations Craig Graves!...

Unskinny Wop: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for February 2013

Unskinny Wop: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for February 2013

Unskinny Wop delivers hits like a Mack Truck. Wop, as she’s lovingly called by her derby friends and family, is a dominant figure within NWA Roller Derby. Her versatility as a skater allows her to transition from blocker to jammer to pivot seamlessly. Wop’s illustrious career with the league includes leading the All-Stars as captain, serving first as treasury and now as secretary, and molding the fresh meat candidates into derby girls.   Off the track, Wop has a genuine smile and sympathetic ear ready for to listen to any skater. Wop began her derby career in 2006 and has since held the status of All Star.  She’s unfailing in her devotion to the sport of derby. Congratulations Wop.     Skater Tidbits: What’s the origin of your name? Poison song – plus my dad is Italian and I’m, well… ‘unskinny’. Number: 4 What does your number mean? My daughters age when I started, she helped pick it. When did you join derby? 2006 How did you get involved in derby? Saw an article in the local newspaper and knew I HAD to do it, loved it ever since. Favorite derby teams? KCRW What advice would you like to give up and coming derby players? Don’t EVER stop pushing yourself....

The Rusty Guillotine: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for November 2012

The Rusty Guillotine: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for November 2012

Congratulations to NWARD’s Skater of the Month, Rusty Guillotine! The honor is quite appropriate, as Rusty holds the title of the league’s Most Feared Skater. Rusty has been skating for NWARD since May of 2010. She began playing for the Backwoods Betties (our former B Team), but quickly caught the eye of coaches and other skaters. Rusty was added to the All-Star roster in January of 2011. Behind the scenes, Rusty can be found taking care of the VIP lounge at home bouts, helping to coach Exhibit B practices, and helping new skaters at Fresh Meat practices. Off skates, Rusty works as a hair stylist. She is an amazing artist, specializing in canvas paintings. Rusty is married to James (who helps with the Beer Garden and security at home bouts), and together, they have 3 fur-babies. She sounds like a really nice girl, huh? Well, tell that to her teammates who have to scrimmage against her, or, better yet, come and watch her cut-throat style on the track for yourself. Skater Tidbits: What is the origin of your name? Well my profession is cutting hair, and I wanted to incorporate that with my name. A guillotine is an execution device used for decapitation; I went with that and made it rusty, so it would hurt more. Favorite derby teams? NWARD, KCRW, Magic City, No Coast Animals? Oh yea, I have some of those. I have two dogs. One is a Blue Heeler mix named Possum. The other is a Shar Pei/Basset mix named Suzie. I also have a cat. She is a brown tabby named Marilyn that we adopted from the Fayetteville Animal Shelter. I also have two turtles and a fish. What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? Skate well, hit hard and be a nice person off the track....
