The Denialator: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for September 2012

The Denialator: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for September 2012

Emma “The Denialator” Bridwell came to us in the Spring of 2011 as a fresh, quiet, skater looking for a new hobby and a change of scenery. With her past time in rinks and her drive to succeed, “D” quickly caught the attention of coaches and fellow skaters with her skater form and speed. Soon, she made her way to the All-Star team and has been a blocker there ever since. D’s teammates are happy to have her swift booty come in for the attack on an opponent to help that jammer get through the pack. After working hard as this past year’s Secretary and being voted in as this season’s Treasurer, NWARD couldn’t imagine life without her. Banker by day, fierce booty blocker by night, The Denialator, your September Skater of the Month. Skater Tidbits: Origin of name: I’m a loan officer…I do approve people but sometimes I have to deny them as well. Number: 850, it’s the highest credit score Animals: Just the animals I dog-sit for! Family: Sin:) My dad and step mom live in Eureka and my mom and step dad live in Florida. If I could remove one penalty: Out of play. I always get called on it. What advice would I give to new players: Keep at it. I love every minute that I’m on and off the track with my...

99 Problems: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for April 2012

99 Problems: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for April 2012

99 Problems  began with NWARD in May of 2010 and played as a Backwoods Bettie during the 2010 season. As an asset to the Hardwood Hustlas home team and NWA’s All Star travel team in 2011, she continues to be a force for reckoning in the All Star’s 2012 season. In the past, she has been the head of Recruitment, and currently serves on the Sponsorship and Ref Committees.   Off the track, 99 is a busy mom of 4 young children, 10 year old Queen Drama PreTeen, 4 year old Rhinestone Potty Mouth, and 3 year old twins, Captain Midnight Refrigerator Raider, and Princess Glued To Mom’s Leg.  She credits her husband, 99’s Problem, and her Derby Wife, Rusty Guillotine, for being her biggest supporters in life and in derby.   During the day, 99 is a nurse at Elizabeth Richardson Center, an early intervention and early education program for children from the age of 6 weeks to 5 years old who have developmental delays and developmental disabilities. These children and their families have shown 99 how to overcome real life obstacles and how to do so with some humor, some grace and a grin.   Busy family, full time career, community involvement, AND derby life.  Through all of the hats and helmets this multi-tasker wears, she keeps a positive and encouraging attitude with her teammates and continues to work hard, making 3 practices and many sacrifices (including a nap or a trip to the bathroom alone) every week to improve on her own skills as a skater. This is why 99 Problem$ is NWARD’s Skater of the Month!!   Skater Tidbits: What’s the origin of your name? It’s the title of a song by Jay-Z. There’s a nice little play on words involved because of the fact that derby is primarily played by women Signature move: Rusty Guillotine and I have this SWEET sandwich crush move. Usually it’s an accident that we both moved in on the same girl at the same time, but you really don’t wanna get caught in the middle of it. Favorite derby teams? KCRW, Magic City, Green Country and No Coast. Animals? Adopted American Boxer- 10 year old ‘Nutter Butter’, a Jack Russell Terrier that my kids named Bentley Xavier. He was a 4th of July...

Coach Mancakes: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for March 2012

Coach Mancakes: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for March 2012

NWARD is proud to announce our Skater of the Month March 2012 is none other than Grant ‘Mancakes’ Epperson! This is Mancake’s second year coaching at NWARD, he originally became involved with the league when he joined the Southern Scallywags, Northwest Arkansas’ Men’s Roller Derby team. Mancakes later joined the Magic City Misfits of Jacksonville Florida in 2009, and this team is currently ranked 3rd in the Nation of Men’s Roller Derby. To add to his extensive background with roller derby, Mancakes is also a sponsored Skater/Front Runner for Atom Wheels. His life prior to derby was built on the strong foundation of speed skating, and because he’s been on wheels since he was 10 years old, it’s no surprise that he is a two time national champion in competitive quad speed skating. “Coach Cakes pushes you to do things you never thought you could physically do. When I doubt myself, whether its finishing an endurance drill or learning a new skill, he does not doubt me… He won’t let us give up on ourselves, so when we DO finish that those crazy endurance drills, and when we DO learn a new skill, you can tell by the grin on his face, that he feels that success too. Then he yells, ‘I KNEW you could do it!!'”—99 Problems. So, where do you find Mancakes when he’s not on skates? Between working at Starlight Skatium and coaching NWA Roller Derby, Mancakes  enjoys competing with the Magic City Misfits alongside his Partner-in-Crime Megasoreass, shuffle skating between jams while reffing bouts, and traveling the U.S. just to watch derby, so you’ll lucky to spot him without those wheels. (Atom Wheels, to be exact.) That’s just the way it goes for a guy whose vocabulary consists mainly of the words “Teamwork!”, “Squat!”, and the phrase, “Whats the biggest part about Roller Derby?”, and finally, Cakes words to live by… “Roller Derby is not a sport, it’s a...

NWA Roller Derby would like to recognize February’s skater of the month, Jett! Its a bird, no its a plane no it’s JETT!!!…. To say this skater is fast may be a understatement. Jett has only been playing derby for a short time but her background in speed skating and personal fitness has made her a asset to our league’s growth and physical development. We all see great things in this young ladie’s derby future. Skater Tid-Bits: What does your number mean? It’s a song lyric: “I’m so fly like a G6” What role do you play behind the scenes? Bloody Bathory: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for November 2011

NWA Roller Derby would like to recognize November’s skater of the month, Bloody Bathory, for her endless devotion to the sport of roller derby, constant drive to reach new goals and encouragement she provides to everyone on and off the track. Bloody has been skating with NWA Roller Derby since DAY ONE on March 25, 2006. Starting with her spot on the Hardwood Harlots, jamming for the Backwoods Betties, playing on her home team the Hardwood Hustla’s and also skating on the NWA Roller Derby All-Stars. Bloody also serves as a WFTDA rep for our league. Skater Tidbits: Bloody Bathory’s infamous derby persona is attributed to the Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory, who systematically murdered and tortured a known 600 women, possibly more. Bathory is believed to be the inspiration for Bram Stokers Dracula, though Stoker used her uncle, Vlad the Impaler, as well. Off skates Bloody is a full time college student. Waits tables full time. Is a single mother of two and takes care of about half a dozen animals she couldn’t stop herself from saving. Pre-bout ritual: Water and caffeine. Bloody motivates and encourages everyone on our league. From our Fresh Meat skaters, to her veteran comrades. Bloody is always there for whoever needs a helping hand, inspirational advice, or a good laugh. On the track Bloody is a great blocker and can also step up to the jammer plate whenever called. For all of these reason’s and more, we want to congratulate Bloody Bathory as our “Skater of the...
