JoAnn Of Arc: Skater Of The Month: October 2011

NWA Roller Derby would like to recognize Octobers’ skater of the month, JoAnn of Arc, for her strength, support, amazing skills, and for all of the encouragement she lends toward the future of our league. JoAnn has been skating with NWA for four years now, she has made MVP more times than anyone can count, Jammer of the Year for 2010, she is captain of the NWA Allstars, and a WFTDA rep for our league. On top of being an amazing skater, JoAnn juggles going to college full time, teaches children how to create art, and practices her dodging and balancing skills while waiting tables. While being known as a great leader, who is always willing to lend advice and offer training to her fellow derby girls, she is also notoriously known in the underground world as “Glitter Bomb” since everywhere she goes, fairy poofs of glitter sparkle will razzle dazzle all who dare to cross her path. JoAnn of Arc is a loyal warrior for our league, scoring 20 point jams in the last two minutes of a game to break a tie, she is an amazing skater who devotes her life and her passion to our league and to everyone around her who could use a little extra help. She is kind hearted but strong, serious yet covered in sparkle, she is one of the best skaters on our league, but she is always willing to learn. For all of these reasons and more, we have nominated JoAnn of Arc as Octobers “Skater of the...

La Bomba: Skater Of The Month: August 2011

This bodacious babe has been blowing up the track this season as NWA Roller Derby’s All-Star captain. Originally from Parsons, Kansas, La Bomba began skating when she was five years old. She attended a roller derby bout in Joplin, Missouri, with her best friend who is the brother of one of our own, The Professional. That was all she needed to get excited about this rapidly growing sport. She tried out for the team , the Mo-Kan Roller Girlz, and made the team in February of 2008. She loves the fact that the sport is ever changing and there is always something new to learn and practice. When she transferred to NWA in February of 2009, we knew she would be a serious asset to our league. La Bomba is a strong leader and an inspiration to aspiring skaters. When she’s not skating La Bomba enjoys hanging with her friends and watching a good movie. She has a vast DVD collection consisting of over three hundred different films! La Bomba is close with her friends, but family always comes first. Her family is very supportive of her involvement in roller derby and loves to come watch her play. You’ll see La Bomba bustin’ a move on the dance floor during NWA’s after parties.  When she’s not dancing, she’ll grab a beer and talk derby with fans and players alike.  La Bomba represents NWARD and deserves this honor for all her hard work and dedication she has put into her league.  We appreciate...

Skater Of The Month

Congratulations Mack Data D – our NWARD June 2011 Skater of the Month! You’ll see Mack Data D on the floor, but not on skates; he is our Head Statistician and has been since 2006, almost as long as the league has been in existence.  Mack Data compiles and arranges the collections and interpretation of bout statistics.  Basically, Mack Data keeps track of all points and penalties, and gives the players the data in such a way that the players and coaches know which blockers, jammers and packs are most effective and against whom.  The data is essential for the improvement of the league and players.  Sounds complicated, doesn’t it?   But it’s the perfect task for an analytical brain like his – during the day he is an IT manager at the University of Arkansas. How did Mack Data become a skater without skating?  According to him:  “I fell in love with this sport after seeing the first NWA home bout, and even more so a few weeks later when I flew to Austin and saw my second live bout ever bout which was between Texas and Pheonix. I was almost killed by Derringer flying into me off of turn 4, had my beer knocked over onto the rink and was called out publicly by the announcer for a spillage violation.  I was hooked!” Mack Data’s favorite part about NWARD is the people: “I’ve met, worked with and become friends with some of the most amazing people both at home and in other leagues. And then there’s the dynamic and excitement of the sport, like none other I’ve ever been a part of.” Off-off skates, you’ll find Mack Data at a pub drinking a cold one, spending time with his friends, family, his wife, God, and music. Mack Data, we really appreciate all that you’ve done for this league, we love you and thank you! ...

Daisy Maim: Skater Of The Month: April 2011

Daizy Maim attended her first NWARD practice in February 2010 and has since proved herself a great team-player, responsible organizer and fierce competitor!  Off the track, Daizy Maim has really stepped up to put her superior organizational skills to good use helping with bout production and event planning for the league.  On the track, she likens herself to a great white shark – and you’d better be careful, she’s definitely out to get you!  Daizy joined the NWARD All-Star Team this spring.  Daizy’s advice for all women out there: “You CAN play derby.  It’s not about size and physical strength, but what’s in your heart……… a determination to persevere.” Daizy has been married for 14 years and has two boys whom she homeschools.  Ms Maim lists Faith, Family and Friendships as the most important things in her life.  If she isn’t wearing skates, she’s storm-spotting, fishing, camping or swimming with her family – perfect activities for the beautiful outdoors of Northwest Arkansas.
