Boombox #1986

Name: Jasmine Banks Nickname: Boombox What’s the origin of your name? Jay and Sin named me. I’d like to think they gave me the name because I am their favorite. That is actually what I tell myself. I also think they gave me that name because my posterior is kind of like a boombox, maybe? Also, I like music and I talk a lot. Basically what I am trying to say is you’d have to ask them- I have no idea why they gave me that name. Number: 1986. What does your number mean? Try not to puke Movationail quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?Actually who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightening about shrinking so other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the Glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some; it’s in all, everyone. And as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -Nelson Mandela Derby heroes: Beyonslay, White Flight What makes you have instant respect for a derby skater? When they keep trying and are dedicated to their team mates. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be here and hold up your team mates so we can ALL be out best. Alex The Great: NWA Roller Derby’s Skater Of The Month for April 2013

Our Skater of the Month for April is Alex the Great! Alex is a newcomer to our league, joining the Natural Disasters team just this past December. But don’t let her rookie status or sweet smile fool you – this girl is a dynamo, both on and off the track! Whether delivering a swift booty block to a passing opponent or practicing her own quick feet on the jammer line, Alex hasn’t slowed down since she first strapped on her skates in fresh meat last June. And how has she accomplished so much in such a short time? According to Alex, “I’m very stubborn so I don’t give up easily. I always try my hardest and push myself to do my best.” When asked what first attracted her to derby and what has kept her here, Alex had this to say: “I guess that I’ve been impressed by Roller Derby since it made it’s reappearance. I like to think of myself as a strong person and, suddenly, here was a sport full of strong people that really welcomes you not matter what your background. It isn’t an easy sport, but you don’t need a solid history of skating to participate. The whole team wants to succeed and wants you to succeed along with it. It’s a great community.” From the whole NWARD community, a warm welcome and congratulations to our April Skater of the Month, Alex the...
